Single Malt vs. Blended Malt

Many beginner whisky drinkers wonder what exactly a single malt whisky is. In the simplest of terms it is a whisky that was manufactured within a single distillery. In contrast, if you were to take the whisky from two or more distilleries and mix them together in any proportion this would be a blended whisky. Some people might be tempted to use the term “double malt” when two whiskies from two separate distilleries are mixed together but this would be technically inaccurate as the term does not exist.
