Glenfiddich Experimental Series – Project XX (70cl, 47%)

This is a most exciting whisky! Master of Malt notes that this is the second release in Glenfiddich’s Experimental Series. In order to come up with this fine whisky Glenfiddich invited 20 Malt Masters to their distillery where they each chose one cask from the thousands which were available in the warehouse. These 20 casks were then taken by Glenfiddich’s own Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, and he carefully married these into a blend, the Glenfiddich Experimental Series – Project XX whisky that I am enjoying presently, which I hope that you are enjoying with me too. First let us take note of the colour of this beautiful dram. It isn’t merely golden in hue, rather it is like that of honey dripping straight from the comb. Gentle rays refract through its solution to greet the eyes in a warm symphony of firefight.

The nosing is immediately bombastic and intensely aromatic, it fills up the senses. The full aroma is like that of a lily flower and caramel together. When one delves deeper into the whisky you can detect a distinct ostinato of anise providing foundation to this dram. Upon deeper inspection there are notes of cinnamon, caramelized brown sugar, chocolate chip cookie doe, and a subtle hint of tarragon and salty caramel.

On the palette, the first sip affords for honey, caramel, brown sugar, musk, and a moderate length to dry finish. The second sip allows for a deeper and richer cookie doe, Bailey’s Irish cream, blueberry pancakes (the good kind like gramma made), maple syrup, an aftertaste of roasted walnuts, all with a smooth finish. The third sip affords for a even richer and deeper flavour of the whisky as you can really taste the underbelly of the whisky, a strong sense of essential oil of oregano with the anise sitting firmly atop. Again the finish is long and smooth.
