Sullivans Cove Does it Again

Some great news from down under! Sullivans Cove Whisky remains at the top of its game as reported in Executive Style:

Below is a link to the Master of Malt Review of the whisky. It’s a great review, which notes that the whisky was finished in French Oak Port Casks imbuing it with fruit like qualities. Also mentioned was that the whisky harnesses a dark chocolate flavour, so if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a bottle I’d recommend after taking your second or third sip have a bite of some dark chocolate to really release the whisky’s flavours and aromas. In fact, you can do that with any whisky which tastes like chocolate. I picked-up that little trick from watching Master Blender Richard @the_nose Paterson; you can watch him on our Facebook Page showing a first time whisky drinker how to sample the drink. With respect to the dark chocolate, try it at home and post your comments either here or on our Facebook page. It’s a lot of fun to try new things together and discuss our results! Here’s the Master of Malt review:

In Canada Sullivans Cove whisky is available in Alberta and is out of stock in Quebec. Looks like the rest of us will have to be patient unless we know someone who can post us a bottle. Hopefully some of our other readers from different places on the globe can fill us in on this whisky’s qualities and particularities.

Single Malt vs. Blended Malt

Many beginner whisky drinkers wonder what exactly a single malt whisky is. In the simplest of terms it is a whisky that was manufactured within a single distillery. In contrast, if you were to take the whisky from two or more distilleries and mix them together in any proportion this would be a blended whisky. Some people might be tempted to use the term “double malt” when two whiskies from two separate distilleries are mixed together but this would be technically inaccurate as the term does not exist.

Are you curious about what this whole malting business is about? Here’s a great article on the malting process:

India’s World Renowned Whisky, Ranked 3rd Best Worldwide

Amrut distilleries produced India’s first single malt whisky, which in 2010 was ranked the third best whisky in the entire world by whisky connoisseur Jim Murray (The Telegraph Online).

This is a must try whisky and do I ever have good news for my Ontario readers. It’s available at the LCBO! I’ll be grabbing a bottle and blogging personal tasting notes. I can’t wait for you to join me for a dram.

The Telegraph notes that what makes the whisky “unique [is a] 75:25 mix of Indian barley from Punjab and Rajasthan and peated Scottish barley. Both barleys are distilled and matured separately in Bangalore for around four years before being married in bourbon casks. The result is a combination of oak, smoke, dark fruit, and high-cocoa dark chocolate.”

A Gaelic Hustle

There once was a lass with some whisky
She gave some to a lad who was tipsy
He sang and he joked but mostly he croaked Some old tunes about being frisky.

So along came the lass with the whisky
She went up to the lad with a flipsee
Of her long reddish braid for neath her brocade
T’was a peak and a speck for the looksee.

“Come aye” said the lad who was tipsy
So the lass approached him with epsy
Of what was at stake, she heightened her cape
To the art of making grand tipsies. 💰

Glenfiddich Experimental Series – Project XX (70cl, 47%)

This is a most exciting whisky! Master of Malt notes that this is the second release in Glenfiddich’s Experimental Series. In order to come up with this fine whisky Glenfiddich invited 20 Malt Masters to their distillery where they each chose one cask from the thousands which were available in the warehouse. These 20 casks were then taken by Glenfiddich’s own Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, and he carefully married these into a blend, the Glenfiddich Experimental Series – Project XX whisky that I am enjoying presently, which I hope that you are enjoying with me too. Let us drink together. Shall we take our glasses?

First let us take note of the colour of this beautiful dram. It isn’t merely golden in hue, rather it is like that of honey dripping straight from the comb. Gentle rays refract through its solution to greet the eyes in a warm symphony of firefight.

The nosing is immediately bombastic and intensely aromatic, it fills up the senses. The full aroma is like that of a lily flower and caramel together. When one delves deeper into the whisky you can detect a distinct ostinato of anise providing foundation to this dram. Upon deeper inspection there are notes of cinnamon, caramelized brown sugar, chocolate chip cookie doe, and a subtle hint of tarragon and salty caramel.

On the palette, the first sip affords for honey, caramel, brown sugar, musk, and a moderate length to dry finish. The second sip allows for a deeper and richer cookie doe, Bailey’s Irish cream, blueberry pancakes (the good kind like gramma made), maple syrup, an aftertaste of roasted walnuts, all with a smooth finish. The third sip affords for a even richer and deeper flavour of the whisky as you can really taste the underbelly of the whisky, a strong sense of essential oil of oregano with the anise sitting firmly atop. Again the finish is long and smooth.
